The Prophecy Band Story
The Prophecy Band was an anomaly in the early 70's for one reason: We were rock stars in Indonesia! How did we get there? Well all of the members of the band were wandering, world-traveling expat hippies from the US, Europe and Australia, who had met up over the years in places like Goa India, Kathmandu Nepal, Bangkok Thailand, and Djakarta Indonesia with one thing in mind--to play great music inspired by the extraordinary traveling adventures each musician had amassed. Add the ingredient of an American "angel" with cash on hand, a handful of well-intentioned Indonesian generals fresh from taking over the country with their president Suharto, and viola! Prophecy was born as the handpicked western rock band who would open generals' new Djakarta nightclub, the LCC.
Little did the generals, the band, or the Indonesian people know of what would actually take place. For far away from the "big city" of Djakarta in our Javanese jungle recording studio we had our minds set on another task ...taking over the world with rock music direct from the garden of the world, the tropical paradise of Indonesia. In fact, fueled by our big dreams, fantastic plans, solid musical skill, and some member's previous flirtations with rock 'n roll fame in the US, the band appeared poised to do just that!
The one "big" factor everyone forgot however, was BIG EGOS!. Yet despite the ensuing craziness, the band still became major rock and roll stars in Indonesia, In addition, after leaving Indonesia with almost two years of fame (but not so much fortune) under our belts, we gained a large following throughout all of Southeast Asia. We even ran our own nightclub, where we were the club band, right in the heart of Bangkok's red light district during the waning years of the Viet Nam war.
You'll see in our photo gallery a smattering of images to give you an idea of what things looked like in those days. We are planning a band reunion in our beloved Bali soon, after having not seen our entire group together for almost 30 years. We were in Bali before the tourist boom, and savored the extraordinary Balinese creative ambience. In fact, our sojourns in Bali provided a foundation for amazing creativity and adventure, including our band manager marrying the most famous Balinese dancer of that time.
A million stories, a million dreams... some of which actually came true. But most amazing is that we actually did it. Yes indeed, we were "rock stars in Indonesia" before the Indonesian people really understood what rock 'n roll was all about. In a nutshell, What a Trip!
Have fun on our website. We are just getting started telling our story. Check us out in the future as well. We are planning to tell our story to the world!
